Suppliers and distributors of Aluminium oxide

Aluminium hydroxide (ATH) is obtained from bauxite by decomposition in sodium hydroxide solution (Bayer process). Aluminium oxide is obtained by removing water, e.g. by burning, sintering or calcining.

Aluminium oxide can also be produced by careful dehydrogenation of gibbsite (hydrargillite) or boehmite. After storage in air, the pure metal aluminium shows a thin layer of aluminium oxide which protects it from corrosion.

Use of aluminium oxide

More than 90% of the world's annual production of around 80 million tonnes of aluminium oxide is used to produce metallic aluminium (Hall-Héroult process). Calcined aluminium oxide is used in the ceramic and refractory industries or, in the broadest sense, as a polishing/grinding agent. Furthermore, sintered α-Al2O3 (sintered corundum) is used as a refractory material in furnace linings or laboratory equipment. Y-Al2O3 serves as adsorbent and catalyst carrier, and is itself a catalyst as well.

Recently, Al2O3 ceramics have also been used in vehicle armouring. The ceramic tiles are glued onto an aramid or Dyneema fabric. This type of armouring achieves double the protective effect of armour steel with the same surface weight. The ceramic fragments the projectile and the aramid fibres then catch the fragments.
